Democrats Compete For Anti-war Vote

The issue of how to pull the troops out of Iraq has topped all other issues among democratic front runners as the early caucuses take place, starting this week in Iowa. The importance of the issue to democratic voters was seen this week as Hillary Clinton pulled an about face on her previous opposition to deadlines for troop withdrawls and is now supporting a plan which would see all troops out of Iraq by March 2008.

Clinton’s change of strategy appears to have been a reaction to her strongest rival Illinois senator Barack Obama’s strong ant-war rhetoric in Iowa this week. Obama pointed out that he has opposed the war from the start, a move aimed at critisizing his top contenders Clinton and North Carolina Senator John Edwards who both voted to authorize the war back in 2003.

Edwards is currently polling ahead of Clinton and Obama in Iowa, many believe based on his strong anti-war position and his call for full troop withdrawl within 12 months. Obama and Clinton are virtually tied for second place as each candidate adjusts their rhetoric in attempts to garner wider support. In stepping up his anti-war talk Obama is trying to draw a stronger distinction between his position and that of Clinton who many see as the favorite to gain the democratic nomination.
