Protesters March On Pentagon
As the 4th anniversary of the Iraq war approaches tens of thousands of anti-war protesters marched in a rally at the Pentagon. Saturday’s rally was organized by ANSWER (Act Now to Stop War & End Racism) who led the march with chants of “US out of Iraq Now.” Demands for immediate withdrawl of troops were made by Ramsey Clark, former US attorney general and well known anti-war advocate Cindy Sheehan.
Supporters of the war greeted the protesters with chants of “USA, USA!” while spitting on protesters and tearing up banners. Thousands of anti-war protesters also turned out in L.A., but far bigger rallies were held across Europe in Istanbul, Copenhagen, Prague, and Athens with 400,000 reportedly turning up in Madrid.
Growing unpopularity of the war at home has led to plummeting approval ratings for President Bush and his Iraq war policies. Many had hoped that November’s elections which gave control of the house and the senate to the democrats would lead to new legislation that would bring about changes in Iraq war policy. However, the democrats have yet to organize themselves effectively enough to bring about any meaningful changes. Growing anti-war rhetoric by leading democratic candidates may help to bring about changes in policy, yet if this will actually happen remains to be seen.
