Gonzales Update

New reports released this week show that the White House is already in the process of searching for a replacement for embattled Attorney General Alberto Gonzales as his support among republicans quickly erodes.   This comes following the revelation that  US Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald was given poor standing on the now infamous ranking list Gonzales had made of US District Attorneys, despite Fitzpatrick’s spotless record and widely praised performance as a top attorney, even winning the Attorney General’s Award for Distinguished Service back in 2002.

The fact that Fitzpatrick was in the middle of his investigation into the CIA leak scandal couldn’t have had anything to do with him being set up for the chopping block would it?  Emails just released along with thousands of pages of documents indicate that Gonzales’ former chief of staff, Kyle Sampson had expressed reservations over the firing of Nevada US Attorney Bogden due to the fact that he hadn’t reviewed his performance.

Indications are also coming out the Gonzales got wind that he himself was a possible target in Fitzpatrick’s CIA leak investigation, he then convinced President  Bush to protect Gonzales by denying security access to investigators.  The more details that come to light regarding this case, as well as the increasingly related CIA leak case, the more the true depth of corruption in the Bush administration becomes known.
